Statement and Policy on Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence presents both challenges and opportunities for first-year writers in the college classroom. Online writing tools fueled by Ai technology are constantly evolving with the advancements in the industry. In terms of research, Ai search can be a good starting point for young writers seeking basic information about a general topic for which they might have limited knowledge. Google search, for example, can provide a basic overview of topics in the contemporary landscape. Still, a deeper dive is needed to evaluate sources and create a reference list that is credible, timely, and reliable. In my writing courses, I provide instruction over source evaluation and the skillful use of library databases, as well as share methods for evaluating links from Ai-generated search results on Google.
Ethical Use of Ai Writing Tools

It is crucial to follow basic rules of academic integrity in any college course and that policy remains true for First-Year Writing. Instruction over how to paraphrase and cite information from outside sources to avoid plagiarism is covered in my courses. Certain online tools can be used to assist students with the writing process, by helping to generate ideas or create outlines for a research project. In my courses, I provide instruction over how to use these tools ethically, following the rules of academic integrity in the college classroom.

The Writing Process, Creativity, and Critical Thinking

Over-reliance on the tools of Ai presents concerning outcomes, including lack of critical thinking, lack of concern for ethics, and failure to develop one's own authentic voice in First-Year Writing. The act of writing requires creativity, which is where critical thinking skills are developed. Early studies show the frequent use of Ai tools in young learners can prevent deep learning. For example, the study below, "Ai Tools in Society: Impacts on Cognitive Offloading and the Future of Critical Thinking" by Michael Gerlich, found that among a group of diverse learners greater trust in and reliance on Ai tools resulted in diminished engagement in critical thinking activities. The Ai policy from San Jose State University is also helpful in framing the challenges of Ai writing tools and academic dishonesty. In sum, it is necessary to strike a balance between the traditional writing approaches we rely on in the college classroom and the developing writing tools in the Ai landscape.
